The Great Greek

Date of Visit:

When Susan and I were invited to review The Great Greek Mediterranean Grill in St. Johns, we were not entirely sure what to expect. The restaurant is located next to Ember and Iron, a place we had previously reviewed, so naturally we assumed we were walking into another full service dining room.
Instead, we discovered a lively counter service restaurant that surprised us in all the right ways.
From the moment we walked in we noticed the steady flow of customers. Some were dining in while others were picking up takeout orders. That kind of traffic usually means one thing. The food is worth coming back for.
By the end of the evening we completely understood why.

Ambiance and Décor

The atmosphere at The Great Greek is casual and welcoming. The design blends modern simplicity with Mediterranean inspiration.

Brick accent walls give the space a warm old world feel while greenery softens the environment and adds a bit of life to the room. The restaurant is clean, bright, and comfortable.

One element that stood out to us immediately was a tabletop program encouraging guests to take a photo of their meal and share it online. When someone participates, the restaurant donates a meal to a local food bank.

As people who spend our days in the digital marketing world, we loved seeing a restaurant use social media for something meaningful.

It is a simple idea but a powerful one, and it reflects a business that cares about its community.

Menu and Drinks

The menu at The Great Greek focuses on authentic Greek cuisine and does not try to overwhelm guests with endless options.

Instead, it concentrates on classic Mediterranean dishes that are prepared well.

One detail we appreciated was the family friendly menu design. While the restaurant stays true to Greek cuisine, they also offer simple options like pizza and chicken fingers for younger diners, which makes the restaurant approachable for families.

The restaurant does not serve alcohol, but they offer unlimited fountain drinks which is a nice touch for casual dining.

We began our meal with a classic Greek salad, which Susan especially enjoyed thanks to the olives and fresh ingredients.

Next came the Four Dip Combo, which included:
• Tzatziki
• Hummus
• Tirokafteri
• Melizanosalata

Along with warm pita bread for dipping.

Susan loved the hummus immediately. The texture was creamy and the garlic, olive oil, and lemon flavors balanced beautifully.

It was so memorable that we later awarded the Culinary Duo Best of the Best Dish Award to the hummus.

I personally enjoyed the tirokafteri, which had just enough kick to keep things interesting.

Food Quality

The food quality throughout the meal was excellent.

I ordered the gyro plate, a dish I know very well after many late nights in college. The meat was flavorful and the tzatziki sauce was outstanding, tying the whole dish together perfectly.

The gyro was served with feta fries, which combined crispy fries with salty feta cheese. It is a combination that simply works.

Susan ordered the Atlantic salmon, which ended up being one of the highlights of the evening. We ordered it partially out of curiosity because we wanted to see how a Greek restaurant would prepare salmon.

The answer was simple. Perfectly.
The fish was well seasoned, cooked beautifully, and served with rice and lemon potatoes that added bright flavor.

On a second visit we explored more of the menu and continued to be impressed.

We started with the house made hummus, which confirmed our original impression and reinforced why it earned our Best of the Best recognition.

I then ordered the Falafel Plate, which featured house made chickpea fritters with tzatziki sauce. The texture and flavor were excellent and the dish had a satisfying balance of crispness and seasoning.

Our main course on that visit was the Australian Lamb Souvlaki. Lamb can easily become tough if not cooked properly, but the kitchen executed it beautifully. The meat was tender and well seasoned.

We paired it with Feta Fries and substituted one skewer for the Garlic Shrimp Souvlaki, which turned out to be another excellent choice.

Susan again ordered the Greek salad and we later learned that the restaurant prepares their salads fresh to order rather than pre assembling them.

The freshness shows.

Service

The Great Greek operates as a counter service restaurant, but the team still delivers food to the tables and checks on guests throughout the meal.

The staff was friendly and accommodating during our visit and made sure we had everything we needed.

Value and Pricing

Value is one of the strongest points of the restaurant.

Portions are generous and the pricing is extremely reasonable. In fact, we easily could have shared an appetizer and entrée and still been satisfied.

We left with two bags of leftovers, including baklava that we enjoyed later that evening.

Overall Experience

What started as a simple restaurant visit turned into a very pleasant surprise.

The Great Greek Mediterranean Grill combines authentic Mediterranean flavors, generous portions, and friendly service in a casual environment that works well for families, takeout customers, and relaxed dinners.

It is easy to see why the restaurant has built such a loyal following in the community.

This is absolutely a place we will return to.

The restaurant has also earned a spot as one of our Favorite Tables Around Town, a recognition reserved for places we truly look forward to visiting again.
