Ember & Iron

Date of Visit: October 5, 2025

A Love Letter to Southern Comfort and Culinary Craftsmanship

Every once in a while, a restaurant comes along that feels like an old friend, familiar yet full of surprises. For us, Ember & Iron has become exactly that. On our second visit, we discovered that the charm, the service, and the flavors had all held up beautifully, reaffirming why this St. Johns County favorite is a shining star in Northeast Florida’s dining scene.

Ambiance and Décor

Ember & Iron’s interior exudes warmth with a modern edge. The bar commands attention. A stunning focal point with bottles displayed like artwork behind glass shelves, accessed by a classic rolling ladder. Seating is plush and thoughtfully spaced, inviting conversation and lingering. The soft lighting, rustic wood tones, and open-kitchen aromas blend perfectly to create a setting that feels both refined and inviting.

Menu and Drinks

Our visit once again landed us in the midst of their Sunday Brunch, and what a delight it was. The menu offers an inventive mix of Southern staples and creative twists — from Crab Cake Benedict to Tater Tot Waffles. The cornbread, baked golden in a cast-iron skillet, is simply unforgettable, buttery, aromatic, and slightly crisp around the edges.

Nearby diners enjoyed generous plates of Chicken and Waffles that looked worthy of envy. The drinks, including my Arnold Palmer made with sweet tea, were pitch-perfect.

Food Quality

Susan’s Shrimp & Grits earned the highest praise — “the best I’ve ever had,” she declared without hesitation. The grits were creamy perfection, while the shrimp were seasoned and seared just right. My Crab Cake Benedict — a dish I approach with caution as a proud Marylander — exceeded expectations with its light texture and genuine crab-forward flavor.

Service

We’ve come to expect top-tier service at Ember & Iron, and it largely delivers. While our server seemed briefly distracted during this visit, every other member of the staff remained attentive and gracious. Drinks were refreshed promptly, and plates arrived at ideal pacing.

Value and Pricing

This is an upscale restaurant with prices that reflect the quality — yet the portions are generous, and we found ourselves leaving with enough leftovers for a second indulgence at home. When flavor, presentation, and experience align like this, it’s easy to see the value.

Overall Experience

Ember & Iron shines as one of the finest dining experiences in the area — elegant, flavorful, and welcoming. Whether it’s a brunch with friends or a romantic evening out, this restaurant captures what we love most about dining together: the connection between people, food, and place.
