One of the greatest joys of being The Culinary Duo is discovering restaurants that surprise us. Not every memorable dining experience comes with a waterfront view or white tablecloths. Sometimes they're tucked into a neighborhood shopping center, quietly serving exceptional food while many people drive by without realizing what's waiting inside. That's exactly what happened with Island Fin Poké Co. Located in the Beachwalk shopping center on County Road 210 in St. Johns, Island Fin doesn't rely on flashy décor or elaborate marketing. Instead, it focuses on something far more important: incredibly fresh ingredients, outstanding service, endless customization, and a dining experience that leaves you planning your next visit before you've even finished your meal. It has officially earned its place as one of The Culinary Duo's Unexpected Finds , and after spending an afternoon enjoying everything it has to offer, we completely understand why it has developed such a loyal following.
Ambiance and Décor
Island Fin embraces a relaxed island lifestyle from the moment you walk through the door. Bright colors, a clean dining room, friendly smiles, and an open serving line immediately create a welcoming atmosphere. While it isn't designed to be a romantic destination restaurant, it excels at exactly what it sets out to be: casual, comfortable, and inviting. Watching your meal come together ingredient by ingredient adds to the experience. Rather than ordering from a menu and waiting to see what arrives, you're part of the creative process from beginning to end. We also appreciated how spotless everything was. The serving stations were well maintained, the ingredients looked incredibly fresh, and the restaurant had a clean, energetic feel throughout our visit. Sometimes simplicity is exactly what makes a restaurant successful. Island Fin proves that point beautifully.
Menu and Drinks
Choice is the word that best describes the menu. Your meal begins by selecting a base. White Rice Brown Rice Fresh Greens We both chose white rice, which provided the perfect foundation for the fresh seafood. Next came the proteins. We selected the Loaded Bowl, allowing us to choose three proteins each. Peter enjoyed: Ahi Tuna Spicy Tuna Shrimp Susan selected: Ahi Tuna Spicy Tuna Salmon From there, the possibilities became almost endless. Fresh cucumber. Edamame. Seaweed salad. Pineapple. Mango. Onions Avocado. Crunchy toppings. Fresh herbs. Every ingredient looked vibrant and freshly prepared. One thing we particularly enjoyed was how Island Fin allows every guest to customize their meal without making the ordering process confusing. Whether you're following a healthier lifestyle, looking for extra protein, vegetarian options, or simply love seafood, there are combinations for virtually everyone. The signature sauces deserve special recognition. Peter selected one of the spicier soy-based sauces, which added just enough heat while allowing the freshness of the seafood to remain the star. Rather than masking the ingredients, the sauce elevated them.
Food Quality
Freshness defines every bite. The tuna had an incredibly clean flavor. The salmon was buttery and tender. The shrimp added another layer of texture without overwhelming the bowl. One of Peter's favorite additions was the edamame. Beyond adding texture, it's one of those ingredients that makes the meal feel nutritious while still being satisfying. The tropical fruits created another pleasant surprise. Both the pineapple and mango added a refreshing sweetness that balanced the spice of the tuna and the savory sauces beautifully. Every ingredient worked together. Nothing felt unnecessary. Nothing tasted processed. It was simply fresh food prepared exactly the way we wanted it. Perhaps the biggest compliment we can give Island Fin is this: Even though the bowls are generously sized, we never felt overly full. Instead, we left feeling satisfied, energized, and already discussing what we'd order on our next visit.
Service
Service often separates good restaurants from memorable ones. The team at Island Fin was friendly from the moment we walked through the door. Instead of rushing us through the line, they took time to explain ingredients, answer questions, and make recommendations. For guests new to poké, that guidance makes a tremendous difference. Building a bowl can seem intimidating the first time, but the staff made the process enjoyable rather than overwhelming. Their enthusiasm was genuine. You could tell they enjoy introducing people to the Island Fin experience.
Value and Pricing
Considering the quality of seafood, generous portions, and endless customization, Island Fin offers excellent value. Fresh ahi tuna, salmon, shrimp, premium toppings, and unlimited creativity typically come at a premium. Here, the pricing remains approachable. The Loaded Bowl is filling enough to satisfy even a healthy appetite, making it an excellent choice for lunch or dinner. When you factor in the freshness of the ingredients, the value becomes even more impressive. Overall Experience
One of the things we've learned over years of reviewing restaurants is that memorable dining experiences aren't always about expensive entrées or elaborate presentations. Sometimes they're about discovering a restaurant that consistently delivers exactly what it promises. Island Fin Poké does exactly that. Healthy food. Fresh ingredients. Friendly service. Reasonable prices. Quick enough for lunch. Relaxing enough to enjoy with friends or family. What impressed us most was how every customer leaving the restaurant had created something completely different. Some bowls focused on seafood. Others leaned vegetarian. Some were spicy. Others highlighted sweet tropical flavors. Everyone walked away with a meal designed specifically for them. That's a difficult experience to replicate, and Island Fin does it exceptionally well. The visit became even better when we finished with one of their famous DOLE Whip® desserts. Cold, creamy, refreshing, and packed with pineapple flavor, it was the perfect ending to a meal that somehow managed to feel both indulgent and healthy at the same time. Restaurants like Island Fin don't always receive the attention they deserve, yet they consistently provide outstanding dining experiences. We'll absolutely be back. Probably sooner rather than later.
