Susan and Peter Martin
Every now and then, a restaurant becomes more than a place to eat. It becomes part of your story. For us, Yamato Sushi in Timonium, Maryland, is exactly that kind of place. Long before we met, both of us were regular customers at Yamato. Peter stopped in several times a week for lunch because it was close to his office, while Susan often visited in the evenings. For years, we shared the same dining room, ordered from the same menu, and somehow never crossed paths. Looking back, it almost seems impossible. Today, whenever we return to Maryland, Yamato remains one of our first stops. It is not simply because the restaurant serves excellent sushi. It is because walking through the door feels like opening a familiar chapter of our lives. The owners know us, the staff welcomes us, and the food still carries the consistency that first earned our loyalty so many years ago. Yamato is the kind of neighborhood restaurant that proves a place does not need flashy décor or a dramatic location to become unforgettable. It needs quality, character, creativity, and people who genuinely care. Yamato has all four.
Ambiance and Décor
Yamato’s atmosphere is comfortable, welcoming, and authentic. This is not a trendy sushi lounge designed around dramatic lighting or social media backdrops. It is a neighborhood favorite built on relationships, consistency, and excellent food. The dining room is understated, warm, and frequently busy, which tells its own story about the loyalty the restaurant has earned. We have always believed that a full dining room is one of the best forms of restaurant advertising. At Yamato, returning guests create much of the energy. You hear familiar greetings, see people settling into favorite seats, and sense that many customers have been coming for years. That feeling of community is more memorable than elaborate décor could ever be. For us, the room also carries personal history. We can look around and imagine the years when both of us were dining there separately, unaware that our lives would eventually connect. Few restaurants can offer that kind of emotional backdrop.
Menu and Drinks
The menu is extensive, combining Japanese and Thai specialties with a sushi program that rewards curiosity. Diners can choose familiar classics, cooked dishes, sashimi, specialty rolls, and creative combinations. The variety makes Yamato a practical choice for mixed groups because even guests who do not eat raw fish can find plenty to enjoy. What separates Yamato from many sushi restaurants is its willingness to welcome creativity. Peter has always believed sushi chefs are artists. When a guest has an idea, a talented chef should be willing to explore it rather than simply point to the printed menu. Yamato has embraced that philosophy for years. One of those collaborations became part of the restaurant’s identity. “The Susan” features spicy tuna and avocado inside, topped with rich, buttery fatty tuna. It reflects Susan’s love of spicy tuna and the personal relationship we have developed with the restaurant. Not many places are willing to name a roll after a customer, and that detail says a great deal about Yamato’s hospitality.
Food Quality
Food quality is where Yamato truly shines. Great sushi begins with freshness, and the fish here remains exceptional. We have eaten sushi across the country, visited acclaimed sushi bars, and experienced many memorable meals. Yamato continues to rank among our personal favorites because the quality has remained dependable over many years. The presentation is thoughtful without becoming fussy. The chefs understand balance, texture, temperature, and proportion. Nothing feels careless. Even when they create a bold specialty roll, the fish remains the focus rather than disappearing beneath heavy sauces or unnecessary toppings. Best of the Best Dish: Garlic Edamame The Garlic Edamame transforms a familiar appetizer into something memorable. It is rich, savory, aromatic, and deeply satisfying. The seasoning clings to the pods, building flavor with every bite without overwhelming the natural character of the edamame. It is the sort of dish that seems simple until you try to find another version that delivers the same impact. This award is not based on novelty alone. The Garlic Edamame earned Best of the Best status because it has remained distinctive and craveable across repeated visits. It is one of the first dishes we recommend to anyone visiting Yamato for the first time. Best of the Best Dish: Jason Roll The Jason Roll demonstrates everything we value in a specialty sushi roll. The fish is fresh, the construction is balanced, the textures complement one another, and the presentation reflects real craftsmanship. It is creative without becoming chaotic and flavorful without masking the quality of the ingredients. Best of the Best recognition is reserved for dishes that remain memorable after hundreds of restaurant experiences. The Jason Roll meets that standard. It is the type of roll that sushi lovers continue discussing after dinner and one that gives us another reason to return. We also cannot discuss Yamato without mentioning The Susan. Watching a custom creation become a menu favorite remains one of our most meaningful restaurant memories. It captures what Yamato does best: listen to guests, encourage creativity, and turn a meal into a relationship.
Service
The service at Yamato is exceptional because it feels personal. The owners and staff genuinely care about their customers, and that warmth has remained consistent across the years. Even when the dining room is full, guests are treated as individuals rather than table numbers. Attentive service is not only about refilling drinks or delivering plates at the proper pace. It is also about recognition, conversation, and the feeling that your presence matters. Yamato excels in those less tangible parts of hospitality. For us, every visit feels like coming home to people who are genuinely happy to see us.
Value and Pricing
Fresh seafood and quality sushi are never the least expensive dining choices, but Yamato offers excellent value for the quality received. The fish is fresh, the portions are appropriate, the craftsmanship is evident, and the service adds real value to the experience. Value also includes consistency. A restaurant that performs well once may be exciting, but a restaurant that maintains quality year after year earns trust. Yamato has earned ours. We know that when we return, the experience will justify both the price and the trip.
Overall Experience
Some restaurants become favorites because of one remarkable meal. Others become favorites because they consistently deliver excellence over decades. Yamato belongs in the second category. The food remains outstanding. The owners remain wonderful. The chefs remain creative. Most importantly, the memories continue to grow. Yamato is part of our separate histories, our shared story, and our continuing travels together. We will return because it offers much more than excellent sushi. We return for the Garlic Edamame, the Jason Roll, The Susan, and the chance to see people who have been part of our lives for years. We return because every visit reminds us that the best restaurants do more than feed people. They create connections.
